Of the ancient christian church founded in the second half of the 13Th century, hardly anything remains except the archaeological remains found near the main façade and the ancient cemetery located in the exterior of the lateral façade. The reconstruction of the building was began in the 16Th century, although the most significant reforms were carried out between 1666 and 1780.
The lateral portal of doric style side corresponds to the first phase of the reform, whereas the principal portal is Baroque and dates to the 18Th century. The plan consists of a main area and two transept areas covered with a barrel vault and a dome on the cross point.
Apart from the architectural ornamentation of baroque style inside the church, the wall paintings stand out. On the side walls, the dome and the upper side of the transept aisles there are various themes represented such us the Six Virtues, the life of the Virgin Mary and the evangelists, with the noticeable image of Saint Luke holding the icon of the Virgin of the Miracle as the actual painter of it, according to tradition.
The vault in the high altar side contains paintings by the valencian artist José Ribelles late 18Th century. The theme of the scenes is the Assumption and Coronation of the Virgin Mary, after whom the church is named.
Around the church, in the north and east sides, there are some remains of the old medieval town wall. These were used as a wall in the construction of the Communion chapel built in 1853.
