Earls Palace

The origin of this building was an old fortress built between the last years of the 13Th century and the beginning of the14th, with four halls and four towers on donjons crowned by merlons.

After the purchase of the county of Cocentaina by Ximen Pérez de Corella in 1448, several alterations were done to the old medieval building.

During the 16Th century and until the middle mid of the 17Th the transformation to a Renaissance palace becomes obvious. The alteration works turned the old rooms into authentic works of art. In the ‘Sala d’Ambaixadors’ (Ambassadors room) a plaster coffered ceiling is preserved. The geometric design of this ceiling reflects with the ceramic tiles on the floor.

Nevertheless the wall paintings of the ‘Sala Daurada’ (Gilded Room) represent the genealogy of the Navarra Kings with war scenes involving the first count feature and are of great beauty.

Nowadays, inside the palace the art gallery shows works with a high artistic value like the gothic altarpiece of Saint Barbara, the altarpiece of Saint Anthony by Nicolás Borrás and the sacred Bible from the 15Th century, and the permanent exhibition by the sculptor Agulló from Cocentaina.
