Santa Bàrbara Hermitage

Santa Bàrbara’s Hermitage is the oldest religious building existing in Cocentaina. Its construction was made possibly during the second half of the 13Th century. Because of its architectural features it has been classified as a church from the reconquest, having a wooden ceiling supported on diaphragm arches and a single nave structure divided by four galleries.

In the second half of 14Th century the lords of Cocentaina undertook the construction of an altarpiece representing the life of the Saint. It is an extraordinary work in the Community of Valencia, and it is exhibited in the municipal art gallery in the ‘Palau Comtal’ (Earl’s Place).

Throughout the 15Th century the hermitage was inhabited by the beatified women called ‘Sorores Sanctae Barbare’  (The Holy Sisters of Saint Barbare) and the conservation and maintenance of the building was always entrusted to a hermit until mid of 20Th century.

In the festivity of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary, on December 8Th, the festival of the ‘Corriola’ is celebrated. In this fiesta it is traditional to eat a bread roll and sausage, to make the bell sound, to walk in the grounds and to drink from the fountain.
